Despite being terrible at running, either short or long distances, I like watching the famed ekiden races that are held at this time of the year.

The sight of people running single-mindedly in pursuit of victory moves me deeply.

My eyes were glued to the TV as I watched the New Year Ekiden on Jan. 1, a national championship contested between corporate running teams at a course in Gunma Prefecture, and the Hakone Ekiden, a two-day university race between Tokyo and Hakone, a renowned hot spring resort. In these races, the competitors run under huge pressure with clenched teeth to pass on a sash.

Ekiden is a kind of long-distance relay race that was born and developed in Japan.

It is the secret behind Japanese athletes’ strong performances in long-distant running, according to Adharanand Finn, a reporter for the Guardian newspaper who spent half a year in Kyoto to find out the secrets of their success.

Finn, 41, visited university and corporate running teams and actually ran along the shores of Lake Biwako himself. He also met “dai ajari,” the highest master in esoteric Buddhism, in Mount Hiei to ask him about how he completed the Sennichi Kaihogyo, a 1,000-day quest for enlightenment that involves extremely tough physical challenges including running marathon distances around the mountain for days on end.

Finn became interested in this epic trek when someone in Britain told him that it feels like running marathons and cross-country races for 1,000 days.

The writer documented his experiences and findings in Japan in a book, “The Way of the Runner,” which was published last autumn.

Most Japanese runners he talked with lamented the fact that their legs are shorter and they are smaller in stature than African athletes. But small and slender bodies should work in runners' favor.

Finn also lived in Kenya for six months to discover what makes its people the fastest on Earth. He thinks the reason Japanese runners fall short of their Kenyan counterparts is not to do with height, but in the way they train.

Kenyans don’t run much on hard road surfaces and as a result have fewer physical problems than Japanese runners, who generally run long distances on asphalt starting in their teenage years, causing damage.

Even so, Japan’s long-distance runners are very lucky, Finn contends. Elite runners in this country are as popular as actors, and those who stand out in ekidens can land jobs at prestigious companies. Japan is a “heaven” for long-distance runners, he argues. Whether this is a heaven or not, it is true that there aren’t many other countries that put on so many marathon events for its citizens.

I have many colleagues of middle or advanced age who say they have woken up to the joys of running.

If a sports version of the World Heritage site list existed, ekiden would definitely be placed there under Japan’s entries, right after sumo.
