John Jones, BA Economics & Geography, University of South Africa (1988)

Yes and no. I lived in China in the early 90’s for 3 years and most of the conveniences of living in China have already been covered here so let me run through some of the conveniences I rediscovered after going home to South Africa.

Milk everywhere. Fresh milk . Cheap. In Guangdong province milk was difficult to get and not what I was used to

Drinking water out of a tap.

Paying the same price as everyone else for the same thing.

Young people with a sense of humour. In China I found older people had a great ( sometimes wicked ) sense of humour. Not so much the younger people.

Being able to walk into a shop , browse around and walk out and not a soul has looked at me. ( There were far fewer foreigners in those days )

Never ever getting lost because I mistook one word for another lol.

Not having to go to the police station every 6 months to re-new my temporary residence.

What I missed most of all , going back to South Africa and all , was being able to walk around with an expensive camera anywhere and everywhere and never ever worry about being mugged. And , like others have said , the ease of transport . And the low cost of living ( back then ) .

Gaston Bonaudi, lives in Shanghai

Absolutely yes.

I travel to my home country every two years and often to a lot of other western countries, it has become a recurring epiphany for me the feeling of how fast is China evolving.

In China, I access my home and even pick up my son from kindergarten using "facial recognition", no keys or pass are needed ... I just need to remember to wear my face.

While In China (if you can afford it) you will never cook again!… The array of food choices and products you can try is overwhelming. Everything can be delivered to your doorstep or even at your GPS location in no more than 15 minutes*. (*Depending on where you live/are)

In China you don’t need to bother about your ¨safety¨ or having your stuff stolen in the streets, any dark alley is just a dark alley… no dangers inside. Even if a theft ever happens to you, the bad guys can be tracked down through CCTV in a matter of hours and justice works. That’s very convenient and gives you peace of mind.

In China, bureaucracy is by default… but it works!. A lot of old school paperwork is being digitalized and most of the things can be done in seconds to minutes using an app, website or WeChat mini-programs. Everything is becoming paperless. I changed between 3 internet providers at no cost in the same week because as a consumer I have the right to choose the fastest service, right?.

Paying in China is beyond cashless. We all know how it works. Now we use our phones but in no time those will be all replaced by our own face print.

In China, moving around is absolutely convenient. Who needs to drive a car In big cities like Shanghai? The Metro System reaches practically everywhere in minutes, the service is clean, safe, frequent, punctual and cheap. Most of the lines are not crowded outside of peak time. High-speed trains rival airplanes as a ¨better choice¨ because they have a more comfortable and convenient process to board. There are multiple brands of bike-sharing systems in every city. There are also systems for sharing-umbrellas, sharing-battery chargers, sharing-EVCars, and sharing-everything-you-can--imagine for cents an hour... everywhere you go.

When you go to a restaurant in China, you can scan the QRCode pasted in your table, make the order in your phone and the food will come to your table in minutes (literally minutes... no 30 to 40 minutes like in any western country). In some places you rarely need to wait for the bill, you just walk out to the door and scan the WeChat or AliPay QRCode to pay... all done!.

China has a No-Tipping culture… which is very convenient, you pay the price you see in your bill.

In China, you can carry your half-drank smoothie or shopping bags from another shop in your hands when entering any business, a bank, a convenience store or a shop and nobody will push you out, give you a bad look or force you to drop it in a locker. You can even enter those places with your hat on (in many countries they won’t allow it because they doubt everyone!). I find the issue of ¨untrustiness¨ to be very disgusting and is a standard in many western countries (In Latin America, and some European countries especially). China is very convenient and relaxed in this matter.

In China, every new product you see as a novelty on the internet is available right away in the local market, something you can do in very few other markets around the world. Very convenient!

I could go on and on with the items. I’m not exaggerating or being paid to say this.

If you want to try the lifestyle just come to spend some time, it will be difficult to go back anywhere else… this is China in 2020.

Chris Ebbert, lived in China

I spent three years in Shanghai on an expat contract, where I had a secretary who took care of all my utility bills, rental stuff, and travel arrangements.

That was a very convenient life.

Yet, when I relocated to England, a whole dimension of life suddenly opened up to me again that I had not previously recognised as being a source of convenience:

Being able to take care of stuff myself.

No matter how privileged I had felt all those years in China, it was actually more convenient to take care of everything myself, because it meant I could get it faster, I didn’t need to wait until someone told me what was going on, and I could take care of details by talking to the providers instead of receiving the odd surprise package.

There is also an enormous dimension of ease of life when you walk into some shop and are able to make small talk with people.

I hadn’t had that all those years. In China, I lived the life of a mute person, pointing at things on menus and silently piling up stuff at the cashier. That is actually surprisingly burdensome.

Ken Morgan, former Lecturer of business law and economics (2019)

I lived in HK China and actual full fat China for a bit (Shenzhen).

Flying from UK to China. I could take public transport all the way from the airport to where I would be living. There were very few gaps and I wasn’t exactly in a city centre there either!

On my departure flying back to the UK I had to think how the hell am I going to get home? As there are significant gaps in public transport. Yes Manchester airport has train and Metrolix but both leave me 5 miles from my home in the UK this means taxi. Bus not a hope in hell as it comes once a day.

So it required somebody to give me a ride or a taxi.

Allen Allington, former Career Counselor and 50 years of world traveling.

In China simple daily things from catching public transportation to getting a cheap, quick meal from a street vendor is so much easier than in my state of Michigan.

We have a dozen or more street food vendors and restaurants within a block of our home (but it’s a small city of 1 million people), many are open 24 hours.

In China if you buy a new dining room light, installation comes with it free. If you buy a painting or wall hangings, they schedule a guy to come by and install it (and clean up his mess). For free.

My wife owns a home, 22nd floor with a balcony overlooking the Yangtze River with the yearly HOA of $35 to cover all building maintenance and repairs (altho if you have a leaky faucet the home owner is expected to purchase the faucet in our situation). When my wife wanted to paint a wall in the house, the maintenance men brought up paint and brushes for her to use (they probably would have painted but she insisted).

Its just different

Carl Johnson, I am an American who has lived and worked in Mainland China since 2011.

Yes. My home state is New Hampshire.

when I go back home I have to rent a car. It is just not possible to get around without one.

so let’s say I want to get something, like some fruit. Well I have to get in the car and drive 10 to 15 minutes. Crap, I need gas. Well stop at the gas station. In China I can literally go to the first floor of my apartment building to buy fruit. In fact I can get a meal at one of several restaurants or do grocery shopping at several locations that are just a 5 minute walk.

If I want to go to a mall or some specialty shop in China I have a couple choices that are less than a 30 minute walk or a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride. In the US its a 30 minute car ride.

In China I can have foo or just coffee delivered from just about any restaurant. In the US most wont deliver beyond a certain radius if at all.

Getting to the airports in China is pretty effortless and low stress. Trains are efficient and inexpensive and even a taxi is cheap. No need to bother people to come and pick me up. In the US it is too expensive to get a taxi so you have to inconvenience someone to pick you up.

even paying for things is effortless with payment systems like We Chat and Alipay. In the states paying by credit card is now an annoyance.

Of course there are things that are not so convenient in China. But those are not usual daily activities so it doesn’t matter so much. I guess the biggest thing for me is that I don’t have to have a car to live in China. I now realize what a total pain it is to have a car. Gas maintenance, registration, insurance, washing it, oil changes etc etc

Luke Williams

I think America sold this paranoia to the world partly because of their gun culture and partly because of their celebration of serial murderers. In Germany people seem to trust each other, I remember a lady living top floor in my apartment telling me to come in to receive my package that was delivered earlier in the day at night and she was alone in the house. It was just a normal thing to do.

Gaston Bonaudi

Indeed I think the media has a lot to do with that feeling. That episode that you described is still pretty common among Chinese, there is a sense of community that is really beautiful. Only happen when you gain their trust and they appreciate you but everybody will do that kind of things for each other in a community. In my home country (Argentina) is also common to have these nice gestures, but the ramping violence and the sensation of insecurity sold by the media helps to not trust anyone that is not in your inner circle.
